Dies Suddenly While At His Work
Word was received in Gore Bay on Tuesday morning of the sudden death of Mr. R. J. Campbell of Burpee township. The deceased who had apparently been in good health died suddenly from heart failure while at his work in a gravel pit.
Mr. Campbell has been a resident of Manitoulin for many years, and for a time resided in Gore Bay where he was well and favorably known. His very sudden death came as a shock to his many friends and the sympathy of the community is extended to his family.
Obituary, The Recorder, Gore Bay, July 18, 1929
Robert John Campbell
The subject of this sketch was born in Hanover, Ont., on September 9th, 1860, and in that place his early boyhood days were spent. While still in his teens, deceased came to Manitoulin with his father, the late Colin Campbell. A year or so later he was united in marriage with Mary McGregor and to this union was born six sons and four daughters, all of whom were present with their aged mother at the funeral, which was held from their old home in Burpee on Thursday. Deceased was a man of sterling qualities. Quiet, unassuming, shoe home was always open, whose hand was ever ready to help those who needed help. No community can lose a citizen like R. J. Campbell without being rendered immeasurably poorer. The funeral, which was conducted by Rev. J. J. Matthias, was attended by a large concourse of sympathizing neighbors and friends from various points on the Island. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, bearing in their sweet way, in a small measure the high esteem in which the deceased was held by those who knew him.
To mourn his passing deceased leaves besides his aged widow, six sons and four daughters, three brothers and three sisters, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral. The sons are: Reeve Angus Campbell and Colin James Campbell of Burpee, Isaac Campbell of Sault Ste. Marie, Alexander and Clifford Campbell of Detroit, Mich.; and John Campbell of Powassan. The daughters are: Mrs. William Gibson and Mrs. William Brown, Burpee; Mrs. Samuel Cooper, Powassan and Mrs. Chris. Burns of Capreol. The brothers are: Daniel Campbell, Powassan; Isaac Campbell Sault ste. Marie, and Colin J. Campbell, Burpee; the sisters are: Mrs. Jacob Scott and Mrs. Charles Burns, Burpee and Mrs. William Wright of Mills. The six sons named above were the pall-bearers. Interment was made in Gordon cemetery.
