     Zephaniah Dewitt was born in 1785 at Cornwall Twp, Stormont, Ontario, Canada, son of Garton Dewitt UEL and Phoebe Waterman; Some suggest he was born in Pennsylvania which would have been problematic considering his parents recent settlement at Cornwall and the animosity of the Americans.1,2 Zephaniah Dewitt married Sophia McKenzie on 16 September 1823 at St John's Church, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, Canada.3 Zephaniah Dewitt died circa 26 January 1845 at Perth, Lanark, Ontario, Canada. He was buried on 29 January 1845 at St John's Church, Perth, Lanark, Ontario, Canada.4
     He unable to read or write in 1805. He petitioned for a land grant at Niagara, Ontario, Canada on 29 April 1807.5 He was granted land at an unknown place as of 27 May 1807. He began military service circa 1812. He ended military service circa 1815. He petitioned for a land grant at Perth, Ontario, Canada on 25 March 1819.6 He was granted land at Perth, Ontario, Canada as of 1 March 1820; Bastard Twp.7 He was a blacksmith circa 1821.8

    Her [Christina's] father was a blacksmith who had a shop in an area now known as "DeWitt's Corners" in Bathurst Township [now the amalgamated Tay Valley Township] near the town of Perth in Lanark County, Ontario Canada. Apparently, John apprenticed as a blacksmith with Zephaniah DeWitt.
